As the first Laureate for Storytelling I am proud to be a patron of this festival. East Anglia is a region fortunate to have a wealth of outstanding storytellers. Many of these voices have filled the ‘Library of my mind’ over the years. Since visiting and living in Suffolk in the 1970s, I remember those voices from times spent yarning with bargeman Bob Roberts, hearing tales from the fishermen on Southwold beach, singing ballads and yarning in The Blaxhall Ship and the Butt and Oyster, trading tales with a young John Row and also in Norwich with Tim Hunkin and a young Hugh Lupton. Now there are more brilliant new storytelling voices from Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge and Essex who from their various gatherings have been coming together over the last few years to give us this wonderful festival. For 2020 we have to enjoy the stories in a virtual celebration. So join in and hear those voices on Sat. 6th. June and we’ll hope to return, live and stronger, in 2021.
